FAQ 3 : What DH88 Comets is the Comet Racer Project involved with?
The Comet Racer Project is based at Derby Aero Club between Hilton and Eggington near Derby, Derbyshire, UK. At this location, the restoration to flying condition of G-ACSP “Black Magic” is being carried out in the Amy Johnson Workshop with the support of Airspeed Aviation. This recovered aircraft has not made any recorded flights since perhaps 1939 and so is a challenging build.
At another nearby location, another DH88 Comet G-RCSR is being built by Ken Fern. This will be a fully flying replica of G-ACSR (The unnamed Green Comet) with the new registration chosen to match as near as possible the original.
The Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden Aerodrome owns the fully restored DH88 Comet “Grosvenor House” G-ACSS and is most helpful, encouraging and supportive towards the separate Comet Racer project.
It is hoped that one day the amazing sight of all three DH88 will be seen in flight.
A curious addition was made to the Comet Racer Project in 2018 with the purchase by a project member of a near full scale, never flying,. model of a DH88 Comet that used to hang in the Galleria Shopping Centre in Hatfield, the town being home of de Havilland. This too is being restored from a very battered condition as a piece of interest.
